PERSONAL TRAINING: NUTRITION 201: Healing The Gut
Food Allergies and Sensitivities
While the gut is being repaired, it is important to identify food allergies, as continuing to eat those foods will undo the repair and start the process all over again. Food allergies fall into two categories: long-term food allergies, or short-term food sensitivities.
In order to figure out whether your allergies are of the long term variety or not, stop eating those foods that you suspect to be causing a problem for a period of six weeks. If you have a true allergy, after six weeks, when you reintroduce the food into your system, you will most likely exhibit symptoms. There are several ways to test for food allergies; speak to a knowledgeable personal trainer for the best way for you.
Common Culprits: Wheat and Dairy
Human allergies to wheat and dairy are very common, so a good precautionary step to begin cleaning up your gut is to eliminate those foods first. After six weeks, try adding those foods back to your diet.
If you have an actual allergy, you are guaranteed to exhibit symptoms. Gas, bloating, diarrhea, burning or itching eyes, or increases in mucous production are all classic symptoms, but pain in a part of the body not associated with digestion can also be an indicator.
