(Don't) Get In Shape for the Summer

Getting in Shape Part III: Improvement of Nutritional Status

The improvement of one’s nutritional status is a must in order to get in shape and not have the process be an uphill battle. Most personal training candidates never fully comprehend this truth for months, and sometimes even years. Again, it is a learning process – first for the mind to grasp the importance, then for the body to take the new nutritional raw materials and do something beneficial with them.

The first concept to understand is that proper nutrition has two distinct sides to it. The first is what you take in. the second is your body’s ability to actually use what you take in.

Food-Based Means of Improving Nutritional Status to Get in Shape

It is instructive to give specific guidelines in this case, since there is such a great range of what is considered eating healthy. First of all, for the purposes of getting in shape as quickly as possible, “healthy eating” is often not enough. Or rather, it would be, if people actually understood what that concept means.

On the following page, I outline core concepts to define what I call high performance nutrition. For many people, the concepts are very different from what they have been taught to believe is proper nutrition. For others, the concepts seem incredibly aggressive. Actually, they are quite reactionary. If you remove all of the crap that the agricultural and industrial revolutions have put on the training table, most of what you have left is perfect.
