(Don't) Get In Shape for the Summer

Fitness Fantasy Meets Reality

Getting in shape is a gradual process that requires, among other things, time to balance nutritional status so that detoxification can begin – because long term fat loss cannot be maintained without proper detoxification; time to balance the individual’s biochemistry – because your body will pay you back in spades for all the Twinkies you ate in the last 6 months, 3 years, etc.; time to address the musculoskeletal imbalances that are part of the natural processes of aging, as well as the natural result of injuries; and time to build a base of strength on which a high level of fitness can be built.

In short, unless you are a professional athlete, and you can train twice a day, give yourself some TIME. As much as possible. Four months would be nice; six would be better. If you don’t have it to give, perhaps consider your goal in light of all the other stresses in your life.

Must it be six pack abs or bust? Or can it be a as many steps toward that goal as possible in the time allowed, at which point, when the summer / wedding / birthday comes along, you can look at where you are, look at where you came from, and pat yourself on the back for the difference between the two.
