(Don't) Get In Shape for the Summer
The Secret to Getting In Shape Equation That the Pros Use = Work + Work + More Work…
When I take on a professional athlete as a client, if I am lucky, I have twelve weeks to get them in top physical condition. The secret to getting them into top shape is simple: we work their asses off like we do not have any time to train them. We typically train twice per day, five days out of seven, on a rolling schedule that changes weekly.
I spend approximately 8-12 hours per week on a professional athlete between strength training, energy system or speed work, flexibility work, therapy, and consultation. These people get to phenomenal places because the volume of work that they perform is extreme.
+ Nutrition as a Lifestyle Change…
Additionally, we educate them about performance nutrition, and make them eat perfectly, or as perfectly as we can get them to eat. And we supplement their diet with customized supplement programs that meet their supra-maximal nutritional needs.
If you can’t do those things, and you’re a certifiable physical mess, don’t think that you can get in shape in a reasonable amount of time like twelve weeks. It ain’t going to happen. Or it might happen for the short term, but your enjoyment of it will be hampered by the fact that you are played out, fatigued, and feel like crap. What is more realistic with that time period is that you can be twelve weeks into a new lifestyle that will ultimately get you where you want, and deserve, to be.
