(Don't) Get In Shape for the Summer

Do You Have Enough Time to Get Into Shape?

If you want to get into shape, do you have enough time? For the corporate individual, it is my opinion that a reasonable amount of time is six months. Yes. Six months. Not fun. Not convenient. Often not inexpensive. Yet realistic. Why?

When an individual contacts me for personal training, they often assume that twelve weeks is, generally speaking, enough time. In an ideal world it would be. The problem is in the assumption that everything is going to go as planned, because it rarely does. To understand the concept better, it is helpful to look at the off-season of a professional athlete, which is the time that they use to get into shape and get ready for their next competitive season.

How Professional Athletes Get in Shape Successfully

Everybody knows that professional athletes are in shape all the time, right? I mean, they’re professionals; that’s their job; they use their bodies for a living. Well, that’s wrong, but when you compare, as a general rule, a professional athlete’s ability to get into shape versus a corporate professional, boy, do the athletes win hands down.

What is it that makes them so superior to the rest of us when it comes to getting into shape? Why do they look so much damn better than the rest of us? Didn’t they just exercise and eat right? We do that; why don’t we get a result like they do? It can’t just be all genetics, can it?
