(Don't) Get In Shape for the Summer
Please don’t get in shape for the summer. Don’t get in shape for the Hamptons. Don’t get in shape for the beach.
Do not get in shape for that upcoming wedding. Even if it is your own.
And above all, do not bother to get in shape for your upcoming birthday, whether you’re turning 30, 40, 50, or beyond. Furthermore, I highly suggest not reading this article. Its too long. It has too much information. And you might find it depressing.
What To Get In Shape For
If you have decided to turn your fitness around in the name of preparing for some upcoming event, by all means start preparing, but make the date represent one milestone in a continuum of a new, permanent lifestyle change. Creating a temporary revolution in your life that has its climax – and its resolution – in the event that you are planning is an ego trip that creates needless chaos.
If you decide to get into shape to begin a new lifestyle, you should engage in change for a better, healthier body at a pace that meets your own abilities. Ability, here, means your own ability to place new physical, emotional, and mental demands on yourself. It also means your own biochemistry’s ability to meet that demand. Its when people decide to get in shape as a function of ego – for the wedding, the beach, the birthday – that they run the risk of extreme aggravation, stress, and at its worst; injury and / or failure.
