ROTATOR CUFF REHABILITATION

Pompage

Pompage is French for pumping, in this case, of the joint space. The technique’s invention is credited with French Osteopath Guy Voyer, DO. Essentially, the technique involves creating negative pressure in the joint.

To picture this concept, think of a drinking straw that is placed under water. Now pinch the straw in its middle with both hands, and slide your hands outward to the tips of the straw. What you now have is a straw with no (or very little) water in it. Once you let go of the straw, the negative pressure of the vacuum forces the straw to fill with water again.

Fascia and bursae, being made up of microscopic water tubules, work the same way. The only difference is that fascia and bursae can become dehydrated. The lack of water leads to friction which then causes adhesion and inflammation. If the problem becomes bad enough, it can be the source of the rotator cuff problem (or any other injury, for that matter).

The Trainers and Coaches of Physiqology Practice Pompage

Mark Diaz, as head of Physiqology and a certified SomaTrainer™, instructs all trainers and coaches in the technique of pompage. We use it regularly as a technique to reduce inflammation in any injury involving a joint. The result is less pain, more mobility, and a faster return to full function.
