ROTATOR CUFF REHABILITATION
ELDOA
Etierement Longitudinaux avec Decoaptation OsteoArticulaire is French for spinal joint stretching. The English acronym is LOADS – Longitudinal Osteo Articular Decoaptation Stretching – in more regular verbiage: vertical joint decompression stretching. This method of rehabilitation for the spine and pelvis was also developed by Guy Voyer, DO and is implemented by Physiqology trainers to improve recovery.
Therapy That Helps
There are a number of good body working techniques out there today that are helpful to the rehabilitation process, but there are two of special note that bear talking about.
A.R.T.®
A.R.T.® stands for Active Release Techniques. The methodology for the therapy was started by Michael Leahy, DC. The therapy essentially involves the use of the hands of the practitioner working in conjunction with the active movement of the patient’s associated limb, in this case the shoulder.
The hands, thumbs, and even implements may be used to search for adhesions – scar tissue – along the muscle belly and the muscle’s fascia. As the thumb (for example) encounters an adhesion, the combination of the client’s movement and the tension of the practitioner’s thumb breaks the adhesion.
In a very rudimentary sense, it is a bit like pulling a wrinkled pair of pants through an iron; the pants are the fascia with adhesions on them; the iron is the practitioner’s thumb or hand. The fascia of the muscle starts out wrinkled, or scarred, and comes out fresh and cleanly pressed, allowing the fascia to slide upon it’s self.
